Necessary browser storage supports consent preferences and site operation. TechView Africa also counts article reads with a privacy-minimal first-party record that stores no IP address, no user agent and no cross-site identifier. Google Analytics 4 and the Google AdSense publisher integration remain blocked unless a visitor enables their respective optional categories.
What cookies and local storage are
Cookies are small text values saved by a browser and sent back to a website. Session cookies normally disappear when the browser closes; persistent cookies remain for a defined period. First-party technologies are set by TechView Africa or its runtime. Third-party technologies are set by another provider. Local storage is browser storage that is not automatically sent with every request.
The site reads the visitor’s device light/dark preference through the browser’s `prefers-color-scheme` setting and stores no permanent theme preference. If a visitor overrides it with the site toggle, that choice is kept in session storage under `techview-theme` until the browser tab is closed. Local storage is used for the cookie-consent choice. Supabase may set or receive authentication-related session information when an administrator signs in.

Categories and future services
Strictly necessary technologies support security, sessions and core functions. The site theme follows the visitor’s device setting unless the visitor overrides it, when the chosen brightness is held in session storage for that visit; browser storage is used for consent choices. TechView Africa counts article reads for every visitor with a privacy-minimal first-party record that stores no personal identifier — only an aggregate per-tab random token, a coarse country, the traffic source and the device class. Outside the EEA, UK and Switzerland, Google Analytics 4 measures readership and the Google AdSense publisher integration loads by default; both stop for a visitor who toggles the corresponding category off in the preference centre. In the EEA, UK and Switzerland, Google's own consent message gates both services. The site also declares Google Consent Mode signals, so both services are told the state of each category before any Google tag is fetched. With the Advertising category on, the site additionally signals that personalised ads may be shown to that visitor; switching it off, or withdrawing it later, keeps that signal denied. Embedded media may connect to its provider when a reader loads or plays it.
If another provider is configured, it must be added to this inventory after manual verification before activation.
Cookie settings and browser controls
Use the Cookie Settings link in the footer to reopen the preference centre. You can also clear site data, block cookies or restrict local storage in your browser. Changing device appearance settings changes the site theme until you override it with the site toggle, and a toggled choice lasts for the current browser tab. Closing the tab returns the site to your device setting; clearing local storage resets the consent choice and can affect administrative sessions or other core features. Optional categories are enabled by default; toggle off any you do not want.
Withdrawing consent and version
You can change your mind at any time through Cookie Settings. A new choice applies to future non-essential integrations; it cannot retroactively erase information already processed by a provider. Last reviewed 16 September 2026.
