We Checked the Account Deletion Process on 20 Popular Apps: Here’s What Actually Happens

Deleting an app from your phone does not delete your account. We examined the official account-deletion procedures for 20 popular online services and found that "delete" can mean anything from immediate loss of access to weeks of waiting.

Yes, major apps generally provide a way to request account deletion, but the process is not always immediate. Some services impose recovery periods, subscriptions or account responsibilities can complicate deletion, and certain records may still be retained for legal or security reasons.

Deleting an app feels final. You hold the icon, tap uninstall and watch it disappear. Your account may still be sitting on the company's servers.

TechView Africa reviewed the official account-deletion instructions for 20 widely used online services, including Google, Microsoft, LinkedIn, TikTok, Snapchat, Discord, Canva and Dropbox. We were looking for a simple question: when a user says "delete my account," what actually happens next? The answer varies considerably.

"Delete" does not always mean today

One of the clearest differences is how long deletion takes.

Canva says an account submitted for deletion is deleted after 14 days, and logging back in during that period cancels the request. Discord similarly says its deletion process takes 15 days.

Snapchat uses a longer process. Its support documentation says an account is first deactivated for 30 days, after which the deletion process begins; account data is permanently deleted after 60 days for most users.

Microsoft lets users choose a 30- or 60-day reopening window before an account is permanently deleted.

That means pressing a button labelled "Delete account" can actually mean "start a deletion process."

Some accounts have baggage attached

Another pattern appears when accounts are connected to subscriptions, teams or other services.

Dropbox, for example, says users with an active subscription may need to cancel it before deleting their account. Canva similarly tells paid users to cancel their plan first.

LinkedIn warns that Premium subscriptions, group ownership and certain enterprise relationships may have to be resolved before a basic account can be closed.

These complications are understandable, but they also show why account deletion is not always a one-click action.

Your data may not disappear from everywhere

Deleting an account and eliminating every trace of information are not necessarily identical.

Snapchat explicitly says some information may be retained for legal, security and business needs, including certain purchase and agreement records.

LinkedIn says information is generally removed from its production systems within 24 hours after closure and that closed-account information and backup data are generally deleted or de-identified within 30 days, subject to its privacy policy.

There is another complication users cannot necessarily control: copies elsewhere.

LinkedIn notes that a deleted profile may temporarily continue appearing in search engines until their caches refresh. On social platforms, content sent to other people can also be treated differently from information stored solely inside your account.

That distinction matters increasingly as apps collect more personal information, particularly as AI features become embedded in services people already use.

Uninstalling is not deleting

This is perhaps the most useful lesson from the comparison. Removing an app from your phone normally removes the software from that device. It does not automatically instruct the company operating the service to close your online account.

Similarly, logging out is not deletion, and deactivation can be different again. If privacy is the reason you are leaving, check the service's Account, Privacy, Security or Data settings for an actual deletion option.

Before deleting, consider downloading information you want to keep and checking whether the account controls other important services.

Google, for example, warns that deleting a Google Account removes access to associated Gmail, Drive, Calendar and other content.

When is your information actually deleted?

There is an important difference between losing access to an account and having the information behind it deleted. The services we examined do not all describe that timeline in the same way.

LinkedIn, for example, says information is generally removed from its production systems within 24 hours of account closure, while closed-account information and logs or other backup information are generally deleted or de-identified within 30 days.

Microsoft allows users to choose a 30- or 60-day reopening period and says that once the account is closed and that window expires, its data and content are deleted.

Snapchat says most users have 30 days to download their data before it is permanently deleted after 60 days, although it may retain certain records for legal, security and business purposes.

This means there may be no single moment when every trace of an account disappears everywhere: an account can become inaccessible before information leaves backups or other systems, while some records may legitimately be retained longer.

When evaluating an app's deletion process, users should therefore ask two separate questions: when will I lose access to my account, and when does the company say my personal information will actually be deleted or de-identified?

Our Recommendation

Yes, you can request deletion from the major services we examined. But "delete" is a process, not a universal technical standard. The most important questions are what must happen before deletion, how long the recovery window lasts, what information the company says it retains afterwards and whether anything remains visible elsewhere.

So the next time you stop using an app, do not assume uninstalling finished the job. If you actually want the account gone, delete the account, not just the app.
