Key takeaway

Do not compare power banks using mAh alone. Check watt-hours, rated output capacity, charging wattage and credible independent measurements.

20,000mAh on the Box, Far Less at the USB Port: We Checked Popular Power Banks Sold in Africa

We compared 20,000mAh power banks available to Nigerian buyers and found that the headline capacity can look very different once output voltage and conversion losses are taken into account.

A 20,000mAh rating usually describes the battery cells inside the power bank. At USB output, manufacturers that publish a rated figure can show numbers closer to 12,000–13,000mAh at 5V or 5.1V. A 20,000mAh power bank sounds as though it should refill a 5,000mAh phone four times. That is not what the number actually promises.

TechView Africa compared four 20,000mAh models Nigerian buyers can find through Nigerian retail channels: Redmi Fast Charge 20000, Xiaomi Power Bank 20000, Anker PowerCore Essential 20000 and Oraimo PowerNova L21. We compared cell capacity, rated output where disclosed, plus one independent measured result.

The key issue is that the mAh printed on the box and the mAh delivered at the USB port are not measured under the same voltage conditions.

The numbers behind “20,000mAh”

Most lithium power-bank cells operate around 3.7V. At that voltage, 20,000mAh is roughly 74Wh of stored energy. To charge a phone, the power bank converts that energy to 5V or higher, losing some energy in the process.

Redmi’s 20,000mAh Fast Charge Power Bank is officially rated at 12,000mAh at 5.1V, while Xiaomi’s newer integrated-cable 20,000mAh model is rated at 13,000mAh at 5V.

ModelCell-level specificationRated or measured output evidence
Redmi Fast Charge 2000020,000mAh / 74Wh12,000mAh at 5.1V
Xiaomi Power Bank 2000020,000mAh / 74Wh13,000mAh at 5V
Anker PowerCore Essential 2000020,000mAhIndependent test: 13,416mAh at a 2.4A simulated load
Oraimo PowerNova L2120,000mAh / 77WhNo separate rated 5V capacity published on the Nigerian product page

The gap does not automatically mean a power bank is fake. Anker explains that a 20,000mAh pack storing about 74Wh can work out at roughly 12,140mAh at 5V after an illustrative 82% conversion efficiency. Anker — Why Power-Bank Rated Capacity Is Lower Than Expected

The same label can hide different energy numbers

Oraimo’s PowerNova L21 lists 20,000mAh / 77Wh and supports up to 30W output, but Oraimo does not publish a separate rated 5V usable-capacity figure on its Nigerian product page.

That matters because two products can both display 20,000mAh while differing in watt-hours, charging power and conversion efficiency.

Afritech Connect’s recent article on the same PowerNova L21 makes another useful distinction for Nigerian buyers: 20,000mAh describes capacity, while 30W describes charging power.

Independent testing shows why results vary

TechGearLab measured about 13,416mAh from an Anker PowerCore Essential 20000 under a simulated 2.4A load, around 67% of the headline mAh figure. Voltage, current, temperature, cable losses and test method can affect the result. It reinforces why headline mAh alone is a weak measure of usable output.

What Nigerian buyers should check instead

Look beyond the largest number on the packaging. Check:

  • watt-hours (Wh);
  • rated output capacity at a stated voltage;
  • maximum charging output in watts;
  • credible independent discharge measurements;
  • warranty and seller authenticity.

Our Recommendation

Do not read “20,000mAh” as “20,000mAh will reach my phone.” For the models where a clear 5V or 5.1V rated figure was published, the number was closer to 12,000–13,000mAh. That is largely a consequence of voltage conversion and efficiency losses, not proof of dishonesty. A more transparent power bank is one that tells you both its cell capacity and its energy or rated output.

Frequently asked questions

Why is a 20,000mAh power bank rated around 12,000–13,000mAh at 5V?

Because the internal cells are measured at a lower voltage and some energy is lost converting that voltage for USB output.

Is Wh better than mAh for comparing power banks?

Usually, yes. Watt-hours make it easier to compare stored energy when voltages differ.

Will a 20,000mAh power bank charge a 5,000mAh phone four times?

Usually not four complete times because both the power bank and phone lose some energy during charging.
