We Analysed 100 African Tech Job Descriptions. AWS Led the Count but Multi-Cloud Skills Kept Showing Up

TechView Africa reviewed 100 technical job descriptions from eight Africa-focused technology employers. AWS appeared most often but company by company, the picture was far more mixed.

AWS appeared in 45 of the 100 job descriptions we analysed, compared with 37 for Azure and 33 for GCP. But several employers showed clear multi-cloud hiring patterns. If you are deciding whether to learn AWS, Microsoft Azure or Google Cloud Platform for an African technology career, global market-share charts only tell part of the story.

TechView Africa took a different route: we reviewed 100 technical job descriptions from eight Africa-focused technology employers and recorded every explicit reference to AWS, Azure and GCP.

AWS appeared in 45 of the 100 vacancies, Azure in 37 and GCP in 33. Those totals overlap because one vacancy can name several providers. Another 43 named none of the three.

What 100 job descriptions showed

AWS therefore had the widest footprint in our sample. But this is not cloud market share. A vacancy can reveal technology an employer uses or values; it cannot tell us how much infrastructure or spending sits on that platform.

The company-level evidence was more revealing. Paystack provides a strong AWS signal. Its Platform Security role says the engineer will own the company's AWS environment, while other current engineering vacancies name AWS services including RDS and Aurora.

LemFi is similarly explicit: its Senior Platform Engineer is expected to own the company's AWS cloud infrastructure and bring deep AWS expertise.

M-KOPA and Yassir tell different stories

M-KOPA points in another direction. One current engineering-lead vacancy states that the company works in Azure, while welcoming engineers whose previous experience is in AWS or GCP. Its environment also includes Azure Service Bus, Kubernetes and Docker.

Yassir produced the clearest GCP signal. Its Senior Cloud Ops Engineer is expected to build and maintain infrastructure on GCP, while AWS or Azure experience is treated as an additional advantage. The same role asks for Docker, Kubernetes and infrastructure-as-code tools including Terraform.

The bigger pattern was multi-cloud

Moniepoint makes a simple winner difficult to declare. Its Cloud Engineer vacancy explicitly covers GCP, AWS, Azure and Oracle Cloud, while other technical roles also name multiple providers.

Kuda frequently pairs Azure and AWS, while some DevOps descriptions accept experience with any of GCP, AWS or Azure.

Interswitch shows another AWS/Azure-heavy pattern, with its DevOps role describing infrastructure across both providers and security roles extending the requirement to GCP.

Safaricom and M-PESA Africa vacancies likewise reference hybrid or multi-cloud environments spanning AWS, Azure and GCP.

That means the most useful finding for jobseekers may not simply be that AWS finished first. Several employers appear willing to translate experience between cloud platforms.

Our Recommendation

If your goal is cloud, platform or DevOps work in African technology, this sample gives AWS the strongest numerical case for a first platform. It does not support learning AWS alone.

Kubernetes, Docker, Terraform, CI/CD, networking and infrastructure-as-code repeatedly appeared alongside the cloud providers we reviewed. Learn one platform deeply enough to build and operate real systems, then understand how the same infrastructure concepts translate across providers.
