50 Remote Opportunities Worth Checking Now

Micro1, Mercor, Outlier and Handshake AI currently advertise remote AI-training and expert-work opportunities across technology, cybersecurity, law, finance, data, engineering, writing and research. However, “remote” does not always mean worldwide: several Micro1 and Outlier roles are explicitly global, many Mercor listings require applicants to confirm their work location, while Handshake AI currently requires participants to be based in the United States with supported work authorisation.

Remote AI work is no longer limited to machine-learning engineers. The current openings we checked include lawyers evaluating legal reasoning, accountants reviewing financial work, cybersecurity researchers probing model weaknesses, designers judging interfaces, open-source maintainers reviewing code, engineers building technical benchmarks and researchers contributing specialist scientific knowledge.

But applicants need to read the geographic rules carefully. TechView Africa previously found the same problem when we checked 200 remote AI jobs for roles that explicitly accept applicants from Africa: remote describes where the work happens, not necessarily where the worker is allowed to live. Our earlier Micro1 eligibility review for Nigerian applicants also found that project-level eligibility can matter even when a platform recruits internationally.

For this roundup, we checked the employers' current application pages on 29 September 2026, removed referral and attribution parameters from the links below, excluded pages we could verify were already closed, and separated explicit worldwide eligibility from listings that merely say “remote”.

Many of these are independent-contractor, project-based or talent-network opportunities rather than conventional permanent employment. Advertised hourly rates are not guarantees of continuous work, and some platforms vary compensation according to location, expertise, project availability, assessment results or accepted output.

Micro1: 18 Current Remote Opportunities

Micro1 provides some of the clearest worldwide eligibility in this roundup. Its current Hardware Expert, Coding Puzzle Solver, Circuit Design, ML Engineer, STEM, Materials Science and several other listings explicitly say global or open worldwide. Other vacancies merely say remote, so we have preserved that distinction rather than assuming African eligibility.

The standout Micro1 opportunities for internationally based applicants are those that explicitly state global or worldwide eligibility. The GitHub Maintainer role advertises as much as $300 an hour, while the two specialist physics projects reach $200 an hour and the ML, circuit-design, materials-science and STEM roles reach $150 an hour. These are advertised rates, however, and some Micro1 projects use output-based compensation rather than guaranteeing payment for every clock hour.

Mercor: 10 Remote Roles and Expert Networks

Mercor requires a slightly different interpretation. Some current listings are specific projects, while others are standing talent networks that remain open so Mercor can match vetted experts to future projects. We have labelled those networks rather than presenting them as guaranteed immediate assignments.

The cybersecurity role is particularly specialised: Mercor is looking for people with backgrounds such as vulnerability research, exploit development, recognised bug-bounty work, CTF competition, reverse engineering or publicly documented security research. The Legacy Codebase Migration role is another unusual opening, paying $200 an hour for engineers with real production experience modernising technologies such as COBOL, legacy .NET, older Java, Python 2, monoliths, databases, CI/CD systems and authentication infrastructure.

African applicants should be more cautious with Mercor than with explicitly worldwide Micro1 openings. A role saying “remote” on Mercor does not, by itself, establish that a Nigerian, Kenyan, Ghanaian or other African applicant is eligible. Where Mercor has not published a country list, applicants should confirm their location during the application process rather than assuming acceptance.

Outlier: 8 Remote AI Opportunities

Outlier has some of the clearest internationally accessible options in this list. Several current technical opportunities explicitly say Global, including its OpenClaw agent work, Full-Stack Software Engineer programme, ML/AI Expert programme and Design Expert project.

For African professionals, the word Global matters. Outlier's ML/AI, Full-Stack and OpenClaw opportunities explicitly support worldwide applications, while its broader coding listing names individual eligible countries and currently includes Cameroon and Tanzania among its African markets. Applicants in Nigeria and other countries not shown on a country-specific listing should not assume eligibility simply because the role is remote.

Handshake AI: 14 Remote Opportunities Especially Relevant to Our US-Based Readers

Handshake AI has a large catalogue of flexible AI-evaluation projects spanning software, machine learning, finance, banking, engineering, design, law and other professional fields.There is, however, an important eligibility restriction for many TechView Africa readers. Handshake says participants in its AI Fellowship must currently be based in the United States and have valid work authorisation that Handshake can support. Some F-1 students with CPT or OPT may qualify, while STEM OPT is not supported.That means these opportunities are not currently general remote openings for professionals living in Nigeria or elsewhere in Africa, even though the work itself is remote.They remain highly relevant, however, to TechView Africa readers in the United States, including African professionals, international students and members of the African diaspora who already meet Handshake’s location and work-authorisation requirements. What These 50 Opportunities Tell Us About Remote AI Work

The most noticeable pattern is that AI-training work is becoming less synonymous with conventional data annotation. Micro1 is paying for expertise in open-source software, CAD, circuit design, physics, accounting, legal writing and consulting. Mercor is building expert pools around machine learning, finance, law and cybersecurity while commissioning specialised work in insurance, mathematics and legacy-software migration. Outlier is recruiting people to evaluate code, autonomous agents, machine-learning systems, design work and cybersecurity reasoning. Handshake AI is applying the same model across professional and academic disciplines, although its present US work-authorisation requirement limits access for Africa-based applicants.

That pattern reinforces TechView Africa's earlier finding that remote AI training increasingly needs non-technical professionals as well as programmers. The valuable skill is often not simply knowing how to operate an AI model. It is knowing a professional domain well enough to recognise when the model is wrong.

There is also a strong distinction between a job, a contract project and a talent network. Many of the opportunities above are freelance or independent-contractor engagements. Mercor's Machine Learning, Legal and Finance expert networks explicitly say that joining the network does not guarantee an immediate project; matching can happen later when client demand appears.

Applicants should therefore assess these opportunities as potential income and experience rather than assume that an advertised hourly rate translates into a predictable monthly salary.

Apply Quickly, but Check Four Things First

Before submitting an application, check the location rule on the individual role rather than relying on the platform's general marketing page. Confirm whether the advertised compensation is hourly, per task, output-based or merely the upper end of a range. Look carefully at qualification requirements: some opportunities value practical professional experience while others require postgraduate degrees, licences or documented open-source work. Finally, save a copy of the vacancy details when you apply because these projects can open, fill and close quickly.

That last point matters. During this research, TechView Africa found Mercor listings that continued to surface in search results even though the underlying vacancy page already said applications were closed. Those pages were excluded from this list.

Our Recommendation

For Africa-based readers, start with the openings that explicitly say Global, Worldwide or Open Globally rather than investing time in a remote vacancy with unclear geographic eligibility.

Micro1 currently provides several of the clearest worldwide options across machine learning, coding, open-source software, engineering and scientific work, while Outlier's global ML/AI, Full-Stack, OpenClaw and Design programmes are also worth checking. Applicants in Cameroon and Tanzania should additionally review Outlier's broader coding opportunity because those countries are explicitly listed.

Treat Mercor roles individually: some listings do not publish a country restriction, but that is not the same as confirmed worldwide eligibility. Handshake AI should currently be considered primarily by readers who are already based in the United States with supported work authorisation.

And do not choose a role solely because its headline rate is high. The stronger application is the one where your actual experience closely matches the work the platform is trying to evaluate.
