What Over 200,000 Broadband Speed Tests Reveal About Nigeria’s Fastest Networks and Why Peak Hours Still Matter

Nigeria’s broadband is getting faster, but headline speeds do not tell the whole story. More than 200,000 real-world tests show a close contest at the top, while separate Nigerian evidence explains why the same connection can feel very different later in the day.

SpeedGeo’s Q1 2026 Nigerian broadband report ranked Starlink first at 53.4 Mbps average download speed, narrowly ahead of MTN at 50.1 Mbps. Airtel averaged 25.5 Mbps. But network congestion remains highly location and time dependent, particularly in busy urban areas.

Nigeria’s broadband market is improving, but asking which provider is “fastest” still produces an incomplete answer.

SpeedGeo’s latest Nigerian broadband report analysed 200,578 tests conducted between April 2025 and March 2026 across fixed and mobile-broadband connections used through routers, cable or Wi-Fi.

Starlink recorded the highest qualifying average download speed at 53.4 Mbps, followed closely by MTN at 50.1 Mbps. Airtel averaged 25.5 Mbps.

The upload picture was different. MTN led at 12.2 Mbps, compared with Starlink’s 10.9 Mbps and Airtel’s 6.0 Mbps.

Those numbers are useful, but they should not be mistaken for a universal ranking of every Nigerian ISP.

SpeedGeo only includes operators that meet its test-volume threshold, and its broadband category combines fixed and mobile connections delivered through routers or modems. The absence of providers such as FiberOne or ipNX therefore does not mean they were slower; it means they were not represented in this particular published ranking.

The time you connect can change the result

Broadband performance is not static. Nigeria’s own network performance research increasingly points to capacity pressure during busy periods, particularly in densely populated urban areas. NCC/Ookla analysis has identified congestion constraints around locations including Ikeja in Lagos and Gwarinpa in Abuja.

That fits a broader pattern already visible in Nigerian research. A University of Port Harcourt study tested 3G and 4G connections in Choba during morning, afternoon and evening periods and found substantial time-of-day variations. On one anonymised 4G network, average download speed fell from 40.75 Mbps in the morning to 26.24 Mbps in the afternoon and 14.34 Mbps in the evening.

The study was conducted over one week and dates from 2023, so it should not be used to rank today’s operators. What it demonstrates is the underlying consumer problem: a speed measured in the morning may not represent what the same connection delivers when more people come online later.

That pressure is becoming more important as Nigerians consume more data. TechView Africa previously found that Nigeria’s monthly data consumption rose sharply as usage across Africa accelerated, putting greater demands on network capacity.

Nigeria’s biggest providers use very different infrastructure

The market is also becoming harder to compare directly. NCC figures for Q2 2026 show Spectranet with 111,384 active ISP subscribers, Starlink with 98,642 and FiberOne with 56,486. Yet they do not deliver connectivity in the same way: Spectranet is overwhelmingly wireless, Starlink uses low-Earth-orbit satellites, while FiberOne’s reported customer base is fibre.

Our Recommendation

Choose broadband street by street, not brand by brand. Before committing to a long-term plan, ask someone nearby using the same provider what their connection is like during the hours you actually need it. If possible, test download speed, upload speed and latency in the morning and again between roughly 7 p.m. and 10 p.m.

Remote workers and gamers should pay particular attention to latency and stability, while households streaming on several devices need consistent evening throughput more than an impressive early-morning speed-test result.

The national rankings tell you where to start. Peak-hour performance at your address tells you whether the service is actually good.
