MTN markets both FlyX and its 5G Router plans around unlimited internet, but their published usage policies are not the same and the difference matters once monthly consumption becomes heavy.

MTN FlyX is not the same product as MTN’s regular 5G Router Unlimited service. FlyX uses a professionally installed outdoor receiver and MTN currently states that its plans have no Fair Usage Policy. The separate 5G Router Gold and Diamond plans remain unlimited in volume, but speeds fall to 5Mbps after 400GB and 800GB respectively.

Is MTN FlyX really unlimited?

On its currently published FAQ, MTN gives an unusually direct answer: FlyX offers unlimited access with no Fair Usage Policy. Its renewal tiers are ₦30,000 for up to 50Mbps and ₦45,000 for up to 100Mbps, each valid for 30 days. MTN also supplies the outdoor and indoor equipment on a free-to-use basis, together with professional installation and a power bank. FlyX is not portable. It is installed at a registered address and remains dependent on suitable MTN coverage.

The regular 5G Router has different rules

MTN’s Unlimited Plans terms explicitly apply to its 5G Routers and use what the operator calls a Usage Threshold Policy. The Gold plan costs ₦40,000 for up to 50Mbps and drops to 5Mbps after 400GB within its 30-day validity period. The Diamond plan costs ₦65,000 for up to 100Mbps and falls to 5Mbps after 800GB.

The connection does not stop when that threshold is reached. That is why MTN can still call the plans unlimited: the data volume remains uncapped, while maximum speed changes after heavy usage. That distinction is the most important part of this comparison.

What if you use 500GB or 1TB every month?

At 500GB, a Gold Router customer would already have crossed the 400GB threshold, while Diamond would remain below its 800GB threshold. Under MTN’s current published FlyX policy, neither FlyX tier carries an equivalent FUP.

At 1TB, both Gold and Diamond would have crossed their stated thresholds. FlyX therefore has the more attractive published policy for exceptionally heavy downloads, cloud backups, large game libraries or households streaming across many devices.

That does not prove FlyX will always be faster in real-world use. Network congestion and signal strength still matter. FlyX also solves a different signal problem

A conventional 5G router usually sits indoors. FlyX instead places its receiver outdoors, where MTN says installers position it for stronger signal reception.

One more thing: check the router price carefully

MTN’s official pages currently show different acquisition figures depending on channel. Its broadband catalogue advertises a 5G router at ₦40,000, and a separate acquisition offer bundles a 5G router with an unlimited plan for ₦40,000, while the MTN eShop currently lists a standalone 5G Broadband Router at ₦80,000. That makes confirming exactly what the quoted price includes important before paying.

Choose based first on coverage and actual signal at your address, then on expected monthly consumption.

For users consistently approaching or exceeding 400GB–800GB each month, FlyX’s current no-FUP policy deserves serious consideration. For lighter users who prefer a conventional indoor router, the regular 5G Router may remain sufficient.

Most importantly, do not ask only whether an MTN plan is “unlimited.” Ask which unlimited product, what happens after heavy usage, what equipment is included and whether the service is fixed to one address. Those questions reveal far more than the word on the bundle.
