Huawei has launched the Mate XT2, a new double-folding flagship that opens into a tablet-sized display, as competition in the premium smartphone market intensifies ahead of fresh devices from Xiaomi and Apple.

Huawei launched the Mate XT2 on September 7, 2026. The phone folds out twice to create a tablet-sized display and uses Huawei’s new Kirin 9050 Pro processor. Huawei says the chip delivers more computing power while consuming less energy.

The company has also introduced a redesigned folding mechanism, improved water resistance, upgraded cameras and an optional privacy display intended to make the screen harder for nearby people to view.

Foldable phones are moving beyond experimental devices and becoming an increasingly important part of the premium smartphone market, with Huawei pushing the concept further through a phone that folds twice rather than once.

The Mate XT2 arrives as Huawei tries to maintain its strong position in China. Reuters reports, citing IDC, that Huawei held 22.6% of China’s smartphone market in the second quarter, ahead of Apple at 18.1% and Xiaomi at 12.4%. Huawei’s position is even stronger in foldables, accounting for an estimated 68% of Chinese foldable-phone shipmentsduring the quarter, according to data cited by Reuters.

What is new in the Mate XT2?

One of the biggest changes is the Kirin 9050 Pro chip. Huawei says it provides stronger computing performance while consuming less power, something particularly relevant for a device powering a large folding display.

Huawei also claims the Mate XT2 delivers 42% better overall performance than its predecessor. That figure comes from Huawei’s own testing, however, so independent reviews will be needed to establish how large the improvement feels in normal use. Other upgrades include improved cameras, greater water resistance and a redesigned hinge.

Why the timing matters

Huawei’s launch comes during an unusually competitive period for premium smartphones. Xiaomi is launching a rival foldable, while Apple is preparing to unveil its next iPhone generation on September 9. Reuters reports that expectations remain high for a possible foldable Apple device, although Apple has not officially confirmed a foldable iPhone.

The broader trend is clear: smartphone companies are increasingly competing not only through processors and cameras but also through fundamentally different device designs.

What does this mean for African buyers?

The Mate XT2 may attract attention in African markets where Huawei already has significant brand recognition, but buyers should not assume that its Chinese price or availability will translate directly to Nigeria or elsewhere on the continent.

Huawei has priced the Mate XT2 from CNY 19,999 for the 16GB+256GB model, with other versions rising to CNY 24,999. At current exchange rates, the starting price is roughly ₦3.9 million, although that is only a direct currency conversion and does not include shipping, import duties, taxes or retailer mark-ups.

The phone is scheduled to go on sale in China on September 12, 2026, and African buyers considering an imported unit should also pay attention to warranty coverage, authorised repair support and the cost of replacing components on such a complex folding device.
