Nvidia Is Buying Hugging Face for $12.9 Billion: What It Means for the Future of Open AI

Nvidia has agreed to acquire Hugging Face, one of the world's most important platforms for open AI models, in a $12.93 billion deal. The acquisition could give the world's dominant AI-chip company even greater influence over how developers build and deploy AI.

Nvidia announced the agreement on September 3, saying it plans to acquire Hugging Face for $12.93 billion. Hugging Face has become a central meeting point for AI development, allowing researchers and developers to share models, datasets and applications. Reuters reports that the platform has more than 18 million developers, millions of models and more than 200,000 corporate users.

The acquisition is not complete. Nvidia's regulatory disclosure says it expects the transaction to close during the first half of 2027, subject to regulatory approval and other customary conditions.

Why does Nvidia want Hugging Face?

Nvidia already dominates the hardware used to train and run many advanced AI systems. Hugging Face gives it something different: direct access to a huge ecosystem of developers building with AI models.

That makes the deal strategically important, instead of operating primarily underneath the AI boom through GPUs and computing infrastructure, Nvidia would own a platform sitting much closer to developers choosing, modifying and deploying models.

Reuters describes the acquisition as a major bet on open models, which can provide developers with alternatives to relying entirely on proprietary systems from companies such as OpenAI and Anthropic.

Will Hugging Face remain open?

This is likely to be the biggest concern for developers. Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang says Hugging Face will remain an open platform, with developers continuing to choose their preferred models, frameworks, clouds, inference providers and computing platforms.

Crucially, Nvidia says its own hardware will not be required to build or deploy through Hugging Face. Its regulatory filing goes further, saying Hugging Face will continue supporting other silicon vendors and allowing developers to upload and download models and datasets of their choosing.

Those are firm commitments from Nvidia, although developers will ultimately judge the acquisition by what happens to the platform after the deal closes.

Why should African AI developers care?

Hugging Face can lower one of the barriers to entering AI development by giving researchers, students, startups and independent developers access to existing models, datasets and development tools. That matters in African technology ecosystems where building a frontier model from scratch can require computing resources and capital far beyond what smaller teams can afford.

Greater investment from Nvidia could strengthen Hugging Face's infrastructure and make more AI resources available globally. Nvidia specifically says the acquisition is intended to expand access for developers and institutions worldwide. However, ownership by one of the industry's most powerful companies also raises an important question: how independent will an open AI platform remain when its owner is also the dominant supplier of AI computing hardware?

There is no evidence that Nvidia plans to restrict competing hardware today; in fact, it has explicitly promised the opposite. The longer-term impact will become clearer after the acquisition closes.

Our Recommendation

African developers using Hugging Face do not need to change anything because of the announcement. Instead, watch what happens after regulatory approval, particularly around free access, model availability, pricing, competing hardware and the platform's open-source ecosystem.

If Nvidia keeps the commitments it has made, Hugging Face could gain considerably more computing infrastructure and resources without losing the openness that helped make it valuable.

The real test will be whether those promises survive the transition from acquisition announcement to Nvidia ownership.
