Eligible Nigerian higher-education students can claim Google AI Plus free for 12 months if they verify their student status through SheerID and redeem the offer by 31 December 2026. The plan includes higher Gemini limits, 400GB of storage and additional study tools, but students should note that the subscription can renew as a paid plan after the free year unless cancelled.
Google Is Giving Nigerian Students Google AI Plus Free for One Year
Google is offering eligible higher-education students in Nigeria and other African countries 12 months of Google AI Plus at no cost. Students must be at least 18, verify their status through SheerID and redeem the offer by 31 December 2026. A qualifying payment method is required.
Nigerian university and other eligible higher-education students have until 31 December 2026 to claim a year of Google AI Plus without paying the normal subscription fee.
Google announced the African student offer in August, saying eligible university and college students across 27 African countries can receive Google AI Plus for 12 months at no charge. The plan includes higher Gemini usage limits, 400GB of cloud storage and additional AI tools designed for studying, research and content creation.
For Nigerian students, this is more useful than a conventional short free trial. A student who redeems the offer in time receives the promotional plan for 12 months beginning from the date of redemption, rather than simply until the end of 2026.
What do students actually get?
Google says the student version of AI Plus provides 2× higher Gemini usage limits, access to Gemini Omni and 400GB of cloud storage across services including Gmail, Google Drive and Google Photos. Its current Nigerian AI Plus page also lists additional access to Gemini 3.1 Pro, Deep Research, image and video generation tools and Gemini Notebook features.
For students, some of the more practical features may be less flashy. Gemini's study notebooks can work with uploaded lecture notes and course material, helping students create revision plans, quizzes and explanations around their own sources. Google is also adding a dedicated student hub, interactive visualisations and Deep Research within Gemini Live. That fits with an area TechView Africa has examined before. In our guide to free AI tools that are actually useful on a smartphone, Gemini Notebook stood out as particularly useful for students working with PDFs and lecture material.
Who can claim the free Google AI Plus student plan?
Google's current terms say applicants must be 18 or older and enrolled at an eligible higher-education institution in a supported country or region. Student status must be verified through SheerID.
Students also need a personal Google Account and a Google Payments account with a qualifying payment method. The offer is not intended for a school-issued Google Workspace for Education account. Certain users, including some family-group members and people whose Google One subscription comes through a third party, may also need to change their existing arrangement before becoming eligible.
In other words, simply having a university email address does not automatically activate the free subscription. Google still determines eligibility during the verification process.
How to claim the offer
The application itself is relatively short:
- Visit Google's official AI student offer page using your personal Google account.
- Choose the available student offer.
- Complete student verification through SheerID when prompted.
- Add or confirm a qualifying payment method.
- Review the subscription details before accepting the offer.
Google says the offer must be redeemed by 31 December 2026. Students should use Google's official page rather than unofficial registration links circulating on WhatsApp, Facebook or other social platforms.
The free year can become a paid subscription
This is the condition students should not overlook. Google's terms state that when the 12-month promotional period ends, the subscription can automatically convert to the standard paid Google AI plan applicable in the user's country, except where local law requires additional consent. The saved payment method can then be charged until the subscription is cancelled. Students who do not want to continue paying should therefore check the renewal terms and cancel before the promotional period expires.
There is another practical consideration for anyone who starts using the full 400GB storage allowance. If the subscription later ends while the account is using more storage than the remaining Google account allowance, Google says the user may have to delete files or purchase storage before being able to store additional data.
Free AI does not remove the need to verify your work
For students, access to more capable AI tools does not mean assignments should simply be handed over to Gemini.
Deep Research, study notebooks and writing assistance can be useful for finding questions, understanding difficult material, organising notes and testing knowledge. They can still produce errors, incomplete explanations or questionable citations.
TechView Africa's guide to using AI for research without repeating its mistakes recommends treating AI as a research assistant rather than the final authority: significant claims and citations should still be checked against their original sources. Students should also follow their institution's rules on generative AI, citation and academic integrity.
Our Recommendation
Eligible Nigerian students who already use Gemini, Google Drive or AI tools for research have little reason to ignore a genuine 12-month free offer. Claim it through Google's official student portal rather than third-party links, understand what your institution permits, and set a reminder before the free period ends if you do not intend to continue with a paid subscription.

Frequently asked questions
Is Google AI Plus really free for Nigerian students?
Yes. Eligible students can receive the plan at no charge for 12 months after successful verification. Nigeria is currently supported by Google's AI Plus offering.
When is the application deadline?
The current offer must be redeemed by 31 December 2026.
Do I need a debit or credit card?
Google requires a Google Payments account with a qualifying form of payment when signing up, even though the promotional 12-month period itself is free.
Will Google charge me after one year?
Unless you cancel, the student trial may automatically convert to the normal paid subscription at the applicable price when the 12-month promotional period ends.
Should TVA use the screenshot as the featured image?
I would not use the WhatsApp/Facebook-style screenshot as the featured image. A cleaner TVA-designed illustration featuring a Nigerian student, laptop or phone and restrained Google AI visual cues would look substantially more professional and avoid reproducing another publisher's social-media artwork.
