Google is about to make one of the biggest changes to Android in years. From 3 September 2026, Google Assistant will begin disappearing from mobile devices as Gemini becomes the default voice assistant experience.

Google has confirmed that it will begin removing Google Assistant from mobile devices on 3 September 2026, with the change expected to take several weeks to reach everyone. According to Google's official transition announcement, Gemini will become the voice-assistant experience on Android. Once Assistant access is removed from an affected device, users will no longer be able to switch back.

The change applies mainly to phones, tablets and accessories paired with them. Google Home and Nest speakers, smart displays and some other Assistant-powered devices are not part of this mobile transition.

For Android users in Nigeria and across Africa, the practical question is whether their phone supports Gemini and whether the new assistant behaves the way they expect.

What changes on 3 September?

Google has been moving Android users towards Gemini for some time, but many people could still return to Google Assistant if they preferred it. That option is about to disappear. Google says access will begin being removed on 3 September. The rollout will take a few weeks, so not every compatible Android phone will change on the same day.

Once the migration reaches a device, Gemini becomes the assistant activated through familiar methods such as “Hey Google,” the power button or the assistant gesture, depending on the phone. Paired devices are affected too. Google says supported Wear OS watches, headphones and earbuds, and Android Auto projected from a phone will move with the mobile transition. Cars with Google built-in can continue using Google Assistant beyond the September change.

Gemini is more than a renamed Google Assistant

The difference is not simply a new logo. Google Assistant was built mainly around commands: set an alarm, call someone, control a light, check the weather or start music.

Gemini adds a broader conversational AI layer. Google's Gemini mobile capabilities include writing and brainstorming help, questions about photos or what is displayed on the screen, summarising information, generating images and working with services such as Gmail, Google Drive, Maps and YouTube Music.

It can also perform many traditional assistant jobs. Through Connected Apps, Android users can make calls, send messages, control compatible smart-home devices, set alarms and change some device settings. The assistant is therefore changing from something you mainly issue commands to into something Google wants you to converse with.

Some familiar behaviour can still differ

Gemini is not a perfect one-for-one copy of Google Assistant. Google warns that some familiar Assistant features may not be supported in Gemini, and availability can vary by language, country, account type and device.

Some actions also work differently. Gemini increasingly relies on connected apps and permissions, while certain quick actions can still use underlying Google Assistant technology. If you depend heavily on a particular routine, smart home command or hands free function, test it before assuming it will behave exactly as before. That becomes more important once switching back is no longer available.

What Nigerian users should check

Nigeria is officially listed among the countries where the Gemini mobile app is available. But not every Android phone qualifies. Google's current Gemini requirements say Android devices need Android 9 or later and at least 2GB of RAM. Android Go devices are not supported.

That matters in markets where older and entry-level phones remain widely used. A recent standard Android device may meet the basic requirements, but users of very old phones or Android Go should not assume they will receive the same Gemini experience. Language support can also affect “Hey Google” and particular actions even where Gemini itself is available.

Privacy settings deserve another look

Gemini can interact with more information than a simple voice command may require. Google's Gemini Apps Privacy Hub explains that Gemini can process prompts and information users choose to share, including files, images and screen content. On Android, Gemini is hosted by the Google app and can use capabilities such as the microphone, camera, contacts or location according to the permissions granted.

That does not mean Gemini automatically receives unrestricted access to everything on a phone. But the transition is a good reason to review Google app permissions, Gemini Connected Apps and Gemini activity settings. If you do not need Gemini to access a particular service, you do not have to connect it.

What to do before September

You do not need to replace your phone simply because Google Assistant is being retired. Check whether your device meets Gemini's requirements. If Gemini is already available, try the functions you actually use: calls, alarms, reminders, navigation, messaging, smart-home controls and voice activation. Then review connected apps and permissions.

If you help a parent or less technical relative with their Android phone, explain the transition too. A familiar “Hey Google” command suddenly producing a different interface can look like a fault when it is simply Google's migration.

Our Recommendation

Do not think of this as a cosmetic Google Assistant update. Google is replacing a command-focused assistant with a broader AI system that can work across prompts, images, screen content and connected apps.

For many Android users, Gemini will be more capable. But greater capability also means more settings, permissions and data connections to understand.

Before 3rd of September, make sure Gemini works on the phone you rely on, test the functions that matter to you and review what you have allowed it to access. The change is coming either way. The useful question is whether you understand it before your phone changes it for you.
