Key takeaway

Builders Festival ’26 is not simply looking for promising startup ideas. Applicants are being asked to show that an existing product can solve a defined institutional problem and is mature enough for a pilot, contract or investment discussion.

How to Apply for Builders Festival ’26

Builders Festival ’26 is not a conventional startup grant application. Its structure is closer to a procurement and investment matching process: institutions submit operational problems, startups identify the problem their existing product can solve, and shortlisted companies may be matched for pilot-contract or investment discussions.

TechView Africa previously examined what the programme’s advertised ₦3 billion investment and contract pipeline actually represents. For founders applying now, the more important question is how to make the application fit what organisers are actually evaluating.

First, check whether your startup qualifies

The official criteria require a Nigerian-registered startup at MVP stage or beyond. Organisers define that as having at least one live user, an active pilot or a paying customer. Idea-stage and pre-product teams are excluded.

Selection is based on three published factors: market traction, team resilience and product maturity. A large funding round is therefore not presented as a prerequisite; evidence that the product already works matters more.

Apply around the problem, not your startup story

The current form contains institutional challenges across areas including digital identity, telecoms infrastructure, fintech, healthcare, supply chains, government operations and smart infrastructure. Examples include AI customs-risk profiling, cross-border payment dashboards, rural satellite connectivity, patient identity systems and IoT road-maintenance verification.

Although applicants can indicate several matches, the organisers specifically recommend focusing on the challenge the product solves most directly. Trying to position one product as the answer to everything can weaken the application.

What you should prepare before opening the form

  1. Company details: registered and brand names, founder/CEO information, contact details and LinkedIn profile.
  2. A precise challenge match: select the relevant sector and identify the institutional problem your product addresses.
  3. Product evidence: explain what the solution does, its important functions, whether it has launched and how many active users it has.
  4. Deployment readiness: disclose relevant government or bank API-integration capability and any current or previous pilot partners. The form allows applicants to state that integration still requires additional work; it does not require every startup to be already integrated.
  5. Pitch deck: a compulsory upload limited to 2MB. The application also asks whether you are seeking equity investment, pilot contracts or both.

The pitch deck should therefore support the form rather than repeat a generic fundraising presentation. Show the institutional problem, how the existing product addresses it, evidence that it works, deployment requirements and the commercial outcome you are seeking.

Submit before 5 October

Applications are submitted through the official Builders Festival portal and currently close on Monday, 5 October 2026. Organisers say applicants should receive a decision within 10 business days after the deadline.

The current Digital Nigeria website lists DNICE 2026 for 10–12 November in Abuja. The Builders Festival page still displays the older August dates in one section, so selected founders should follow the current Digital Nigeria schedule unless organisers issue another update.

Our Recommendation

Do not start by polishing the pitch deck. Start by choosing the single institutional challenge your existing product can defend most convincingly. Then make every answer—traction, features, integration readiness and pilot history—prove that match.

Frequently asked questions

Who can apply for Builders Festival ’26?

The programme is open to Nigerian-registered startups at MVP stage or beyond. Applicants should already have at least one live user, an active pilot or a paying customer. Idea-stage and pre-product startups are not eligible.

What is the deadline for Builders Festival ’26 applications?

The current application deadline is 5 October 2026.

Do founders need to have paying customers before applying?

Not necessarily. The eligibility criteria allow startups with at least one live user, an active pilot or a paying customer, so commercial revenue is not the only way to demonstrate traction.

What documents are required to apply?

Applicants should prepare their company and founder details, information about the product and its traction, the institutional challenge being addressed, relevant integration or pilot experience, and a pitch deck of no more than 2MB.

Can a startup apply for more than one challenge?

The application allows founders to indicate multiple relevant challenges, but organisers recommend concentrating on the challenge the product solves most directly. A focused application is likely to make the product-to-problem fit easier to assess.

Is Builders Festival ’26 offering grants?

The opportunity should not be treated simply as a grant programme. The application asks founders whether they are interested in equity investment, pilot contracts or both, reflecting its broader investment and institutional-matching structure.

Where can founders apply?

Applications are submitted through the official Builders Festival ’26 portal operated under the Digital Nigeria/NITDA programme.

Does early stage startup without early stage customers but MVP is ready for rollout, qualify for this program?

    1. Seun

If you have a minimum viable product that really solves one of the problems outlined by the program official. I’d advise you to submit an application because you could start to look for early customers now (1 or 2 customers would do). As far as it solves their problems and they are willing to use the product. Note the application deadline is on Oct 5. You can still do lots before then. Good luck 👍

Absolutely agree. If the product already solves a real problem, there’s no need to wait for perfection. Getting a few early users and learning from them before the deadline could make a meaningful difference.
