Airtel Money’s proposed London IPO will give public investors a rare opportunity to put a standalone value on one of Africa’s largest mobile-money businesses. The company already processes $213 billion annually, but much of its potential growth may still come from converting existing Airtel telecom customers into financial-services users.
Airtel Money Moves $213 Billion a Year. Its London IPO Will Test What African Mobile Money Is Really Worth
Airtel Money has opened the door to a London IPO after processing $213 billion in transactions over 12 months. Behind that number is a profitable African payments network with 53 million monthly users and a large pool of Airtel subscribers it has yet to convert.
Airtel Money is preparing to become a separately listed company, giving public investors a rare chance to put a market value on one of Africa’s largest mobile-money businesses.
The company formally announced on September 23 that it intends to float on the London Stock Exchange. Its filing says the platform had about 53 million monthly active users across 13 African markets as of June 30, 2026, and processed $213 billion in total transaction value during the preceding 12 months.
That $213 billion is the attention-grabber, but it needs context. It represents the value of transactions moving through Airtel Money, not money the company earned. Airtel Money generated $1.346 billion in revenue in the financial year ended March 2026, while its EBITDA margin was approximately 50%.
This is already a large, profitable payments network
Airtel Money now supports cash deposits and withdrawals, merchant payments, bills, international transfers, salary payments and other financial services.
Its physical network is substantial too: more than 2.3 million agents and over 43,000 exclusive retail touchpoints. Airtel Money also says it has no external borrowings, while capital expenditure represented just 3% of revenue in its 2026 financial year. That helps explain why the listing is structured differently from a typical growth-company IPO.
Airtel Money is not raising fresh capital
The proposed offer will be a secondary sale of existing shares. Current shareholders will sell part of their holdings, while Airtel Money itself will not receive new capital from the offering.
Airtel Africa currently owns 77.85% of the business and expects to remain a long-term strategic shareholder. At least 10% of Airtel Money's shares are expected to be in public hands after admission.
The International Finance Corporation has also agreed to act as a cornerstone investor, committing to buy up to £67.2 million, or roughly $90 million, of shares at the final offer price.
The bigger opportunity may still be inside Airtel
One of the most revealing numbers in the filing is not the $213 billion processed value. Airtel Money currently reaches only 41% of Airtel Africa's 128.9 million telecom subscribers across the relevant markets. The company estimates that more than 75 million Airtel subscribers are not yet Airtel Money customers.
Its smartphone strategy could matter just as much. In six major markets, Airtel says app users generate average revenue per user of about $9.50, compared with $1.80 for feature-phone customers. App transaction value nearly doubled from about $5.5 billion to $10.95 billion between the 12 months ending June 2025 and June 2026.
That leaves two obvious growth paths: converting more Airtel subscribers into financial-services users and moving more customers into higher-value digital products.
What the London market will decide
Reports have suggested a possible valuation of $8 billion to $9 billion, but Airtel Money has not formally set that valuation. Further offer details, including the price range and number of shares, are expected in October.
The eventual pricing will therefore do more than value one company. It will show how public-market investors value an African fintech business with tens of millions of active users, strong margins, a vast agent network and substantial room for further digital adoption.
For Africa's wider fintech industry, that makes the listing worth watching.
Our Recommendation
Treat the reported $8–9 billion valuation as provisional until Airtel Money publishes its official price range. The confirmed numbers are already significant: $213 billion in annual processed value, 53 million monthly active users, $1.346 billion in annual revenue and more than 75 million Airtel telecom subscribers still outside its payments ecosystem.
